Founded on March 21, 2006 in San Francisco, CA, by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass, Twitter is a social networking service that allows users to put their thoughts on the Internet in 140 characters or less through what are known as “tweets.” Twitter made their IPO on the New York Stock Exchange with an opening price of $45.10 on November 7, 2013.
Users can either post their own information in their tweets, retweet (forward the tweet) of another user, or send and reply to direct messages. An “@” symbol is followed by a specific Twitter user name when referencing that particular account, and a “#” hashtag symbol is used to reference a particular topic. The most popular hashtag terms are typically featured under the “Trends” section on Twitter. In July, #DescribeBabiesIn3Words was just one of the many popular hashtags that led to the creation of numerous memes.
As of March 31, 2015, Twitter averaged approximately 302 million monthly active users and 500 million tweets sent per day. Although their headquarters are still in San Francisco, they have offices all over the world, including in New York, Seattle, Chicago, Paris, Toronto, and Amsterdam. Jack Dorsey currently serves as the Interim CEO after CEO Dick Costolo resigned on July 1, 2015. Dorsey is also Chairman of the Board of Directors.
