While most memes are funny and get people laughing, there are also popular accounts on Instagram who are creating memes that are beyond adorable, like BlackCanine. For this account, created by Kara from New Jersey, we get to follow along with the daily lives of Ralph and Polar Pig, a Lab mix and former mama Pit Bull. It’s all about promoting a positive image for Pit Bulls and for rescue dogs and it is done in an adorable manner!
Kara said, “I’ve been involved in the animal welfare world for a few years and found I really like taking photos of dogs (my own, dogs I work with, dogs in need of homes, etc.). It just sort of grew from there. I didn’t post consistently (a few times per week) until about a year and a half ago.” And her posts have been getting more and more popular, as she has gained over 18,000 followers on her Instagram account BlackCanine!
Remember to thank a Veteran today, both two and four legged (and everyday). My brother, @tporto21 is a veteran (the brother who was just married last month!) and there wasn't a single day we didn't worry about him while he was in Iraq. He made it home safely, but not every family has this happy ending. #VeteransDay #USA #America #??
BlackCanine started with a little play time for Ralph: “My first post was a photo of my dog Ralph as a puppy playing with another dog, who happened to be a Pit Bull. They were rolling in the dirt, taking turns chomping on each others faces and engaging in games of chase/keep away. Shortly after, a woman came into the park with her dog and was scoffing at the Pit Bull’s human for having a ‘dangerous dog.’ She sounded so foolish, but unfortunately, she and many others believe ‘Pit Bull type dogs’ are ‘dangerous’ due to unreliable media propaganda. So, I took the anger I felt and tried to channel it into something productive.”
And it took off from there, which surprised Kara: “I did not expect anything like this to ever happen. I really just started this account to promote positive awareness of black dogs by photographing my black dog Ralph (hence the username) and his best dog bud Hubert. We adopted Polar Pig in 2014 and I’ve just never had the heart to change my username. Ralph taught me so much about canines and their behavior; I owe much to him. I’ve also met so many really great people working toward similar goals with similar philosophies around the country and world. The animal welfare world can be discouraging, so it’s nice to know those people exist.”
I completely understand, though, because who doesn’t love photos of cute dogs playing together? As far as the most popular posts, Kara said, “It’s usually photos of my two licking each other’s faces. It’s really, really, really cute,” and I could not agree more!
Like the purpose of her account, Kara added: “Be kind to your dog and turn to credible sources (books, peer reviewed articles, The Whole Dog Journal) for information. Also, please, adopt, don’t shop.” I agree and in the meantime, check out more of the adorable BlackCanine posts here:
Polar Pig was definitely tricked, but still acquired some treats ?. I put this empty pumpkin bucket on the floor, curious as to what she would do. She immediately inspected the bucket by sticking her big head in it and had some difficulty removing her head. (Don't fret, she had the bucket on her head for all of 10 seconds. No Polar Pigs were harmed in the making of this photo). #PolarPigAndRalph #PitBull #PitBulls #PitBullLove #PitBullsAreLove #PitbullInstagram #Halloween #TrickOrTreat #? #ILoveMyPitBull #AdoptDontShop #AdoptTheCropped #HappyHalloween
Today marks an extremely special event for my family as on July 10, 2014 we began fostering this special and sweet girl, who came to us in rough shape. She was plagued by dermatitis, ear infections in both ears, three mammary gland tumors, and a recessed vulva but she didn't seem to let these conditions affect her quality of life and was always seemingly happy – so much so, her shelter name was "Smiley." After everything we went through together, I just couldn't part with my baby pig and I am so glad that we officially made the decision to make her part of our family in October 2014. I love you, Polar Pig and I am so thankful for this precious time we get to share together. #adoptthecropped #polarpigandralph #adoptpitbulls #pitbullsarelove #adoptdontshop #adoptfosterrescue
If you will recall my post from last week, I predicted this little pig would roll in disgusting things before the weekend was over. Here is photographic proof that I was not wrong. _________________________________ Polar Pig and Ralph's "Uncle" (aka my brother & Sweet Pea's dad) served in the US Army for several years. He came home untouched physically, but not all are so lucky. Happy #MemorialDay to all who have given their lives in service. #USAUSAUSA ??
He dreams of someday hosting his own radio talk show, but in the meantime he works in his pajamas and loves anything and everything about reality television (well, except the Kardsahians, but we don't think he's alone in that one). From Big Brother to The Bachelorette, he can fill you in on all the details you never thought you needed or wanted.
