If you’ve ever been a part of the online dating scene – regardless of what site or app you’re using – you know that it’s quite an interesting experience to say the least. I don’t know one person who has done it without walking away with a story or two.
The @Best_of_Grindr Instagram account was started by Kash Kunde, who is a 23-year-old San Francisco, Calif. resident, as well as a full-time MBA student and a Search Return Agent for BC Forward. Regarding the account, he explained, “My Instagram was originally geared toward posting the humorous Grindr (gay dating/hookup app) conversations. However, in recent months the focus has shifted toward general gay humor. Now the majority of what I post are memes centered around gay love, dating, sex, life, etc., while simultaneously still posting Grindr conversations.”
As far as when and why he started the account, Kash stated, “I started the account just over a year ago. To be completely honest, it all started the night before a big exam in my Leadership, Teams and Organization class. I was utilizing Grindr as a means of procrastination and at that time I received a particularly foul message. It was so outlandish and detailed that I couldn’t help but laugh. I then used the hashtag #Grindr on Instagram to see what other people posted. I had so many ridiculous conversations that I had saved on my phone, I thought it would be a great idea to start the account.”
So what exactly is his process for putting together a post? “Having been posting for so long, it comes pretty naturally at this point. I will find a picture or GIF somewhere on the Internet and I usually think of a fitting caption pretty quick. I have multiple apps set up on my phone and I can typically develop a finished meme in under a minute. One of the biggest challenges is being 100% up to the moment in pop culture. The Kardashians are almost constantly posting ridiculous images that are perfect material for memes. Hoping to be ahead of the masses, memes generated from a trending image typically do better the earlier you post.”
Speaking of how long he’s been posting, @Best_of_Grindr has been around since October 6, 2014, and it already has over 44,000 followers. It’s no surprise, though. I mean, really, just take a look at the awesome content.
When it comes to his first post, Kash explained, “The link above was the first piece of material I ever posted. I found it somewhere on Google and I thought it was hilarious. The content I publish from Grindr are both conversations that I’ve personally had or submissions from other people.”
Let’s be serious, if you’re into online dating, chances are you’ve gotten a similar message like the one in the post above where it starts out with some type of innocent greeting followed by a sexual comment out of nowhere.
As far as which of the posts was the most viral, he said, “The above link is the most popular meme that I created. I believe the reason it became popular was due to two key reasons. First, I find it very relatable. I mean, who hasn’t been caught staring off at someone they found attractive? We all have and it’s always embarrassing! Additionally, I think users enjoy this post because we get a collective laugh at how awkwardly Tom Daley tries to recover from his moment of staring.” Raise your hand if you’ve ever been caught checking out someone who is attractive. ::raises hand::.
There’s a lot of fantastic content on @Best_of_Grindr, but what’s been Kash’s favorite meme that he’s posted? “This has to be one of my favorites.”
He went on to say, “I have two posts now that relate to ‘Hello‘ and they will always make me smile. The reason that it is my favorite is because it is not only topical but also highly relatable. In my experience, those two aspects lead to the most successful Instagram memes.
“I believe this Grindr post did so well because Adele’s ‘Hello’ is everywhere right now.”
“Every time I see this conversation it makes me giggle because it is simply so appropriate at this time.” Speaking of Adele, you can check out our collection of Adele memes here.
With so many amazing Instagram accounts out there, what Instagram meme creators in his area of interest does Kash admire? “I’ve found the ‘big guys’ like @thefatjewish, @fuckjerry, and @nochill absolutely hilarious. When I first started my account, they already had millions of followers and I was completely awestruck. After searching, I realized there was no large meme account that focused on gay humor. This was a big motivation for me to become that account.
“However, there have been several smaller humor-based accounts that have been very inspirational. When I first started, I was extremely naive thinking I’d be getting hundreds of followers a day from the get-go. This could not be further from the truth. Meme accounts like @humor_me_pink and @martinisandmayhem gave me the strength to keep up the pace. They were much smaller than the big guys, but their growth was steady and they were posting advertisements for big brands.”
And why does Kash think his account has staying power? “I think this account resonates with so many people because I have geared my material for a target market that was untouched in the Instagram space. The closest account I have found that aims toward gay humor is @drinksforgays. While I LOVE their page and have followed it for some time, I’ve noticed that the vast majority of their material focuses more on drinking humor than humor for gay men. I think my page has been gaining strength in recent months due to the niche market I attempt to fill.”
